Can’t seem to get your mower’s ignition running smoothly? Do you know what would come in handy?
An ignition coil resistance chart right by your side. Understanding the correct resistance values for ignition coils is vital when it comes to diagnosing and troubleshooting ignition problems in mowers.
In this article, I’ll try to cover every possible question you might have had regarding resistance charts for lawn mower ignitions. So, without further ado, let’s get the ball rolling.
Why Does Ignition Coil Resistance Matter?
Ignition coil resistance plays a crucial role for several reasons. One of the key reasons is that you cannot simply choose an ignition coil without knowing the resistance of the previous one.
Blindly selecting a coil without measuring its resistance can lead to improper functioning. You might end up compounding your misery, instead of making it go away.
The accuracy of spark plug ignition relies on a specific level of resistance within the ignition coil. Without this appropriate resistance, the ignition process is unlikely to work as intended.
Higher and lower values of resistance will do you no good; you need the exact numbers to serve your purpose.
Ignition Coil Resistance Specifications
The ignition coil resistance specifications vary across different lawn mower brands because each brand designs its engines and ignition systems differently.
These specifications ensure that the ignition coil works in harmony with the rest of the components in the system. Lawn mower ignition coil resistance typically varies from 2500 ohms to 5000 ohms.
Ignition Coil Range For Various Lawn Mower Engines
Brand | Minimum Resistance | Maximum Resistance |
Kohler | 2400 ohms | 4900 ohms |
Briggs and Stratton | 2500 ohms | 5000 ohms |
Stihl | 2500 ohms | 5000 ohms |
Husqvarna | 2550 ohms | 5050 ohms |
Kawasaki | 2750 ohms | 5200 ohms |
Kohler Ignition Coil Resistance Chart
Kohler engines are renowned for their robust performance, making them a popular choice for many mower manufacturers, including Ariens, John Deere, and Toro.
When I conducted a resistance test on the ignition coil of a Kohler engine, I found that the resistance ranged from 2400 ohms at the lower end to a maximum of 4900 ohms.
Briggs and Stratton Ignition Coil Resistance Chart
I did not put my multimeter away as I moved on to measure the resistance of a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower. This time, I noticed that the resistance value did not drop below the 2500 ohm mark.
On the other end of the spectrum, 5000 ohms proved to be the resistance ceiling. Since it has a slightly higher range than Kohler engines, I wouldn’t interchange them.
Stihl Ignition Coil Resistance Chart
My multimeter prongs then moved on to gauge a Stihl engine. Through my comprehensive testing on the Stihl engine, I determined that the resistance range of the ignition coil fell between 2500 ohms and 5000 ohms, which aligns closely with the resistance values I found in the Briggs engine.
This similarity in resistance ratios makes Stihl and Briggs and Stratton engines more interchangeable.
That said, I must tell you that I did not try it myself, and some component mismatches might give rise to compatibility issues. In terms of resistance, however, there should not be any problem.
Husqvarna Ignition Coil Resistance Chart
Husqvarna is another lawn mower engine that tics the three right boxes; durability, power, and fuel efficiency. So, I could not leave it out for this article. Like the three engines I covered earlier, I established a resistance range for Husqvarna engines.
At the lower end, the resistance measured around 2550 ohms to 2575 ohms, while at the upper end, it peaked at approximately 5050 ohms to 5100 ohms.
It’s worth noting that the Husqvarna chart closely resembles a two-stroke ignition coil resistance chart, indicating the similarity in resistance values.
When sourcing a replacement coil for your Husqvarna engine, you must ensure that the replacement unit at it seamlessly integrates with the other components.
Overlooking this crucial step could lead to short circuits and potentially cause irreversible damage to the engine.
Kawasaki Ignition Coil Resistance Chart
To round off the list, I tested a Kawasaki lawn mower engine. Kubota mowers typically come equipped with stock Kawasaki engines, which are quite popular for their quiet operation and exceptional performance.
I used a Kawasaki engine from a Kubota mower. You can find Kawasaki engines in other brands too, even in some Husqvarna models.
In comparison to the Briggs engine, the ignition coil in this configuration demonstrates a marginal difference in resistance value, which proves to be inconsequential.
The ignition components integrated into this system are specifically engineered to handle a higher output voltage, reaching approximately 5200 ohms. The lowest resistance point I found is in the ballpark of 2750 ohms.
If the ignition coil resistance value rises above or falls below these ranges in these engines, it’s highly likely that you are dealing with a faulty ignition coil.
You might need a new ignition coil, but to be sure, try taking a second opinion from a professional.

How To Measure The Ignition Coil Resistance?
To begin, take off the ignition coil from the mower. It’s a small cylindrical component in your mower engine. Consult the manufacturer’s manual to find out its exact location.
Of course, before attempting to remove it, make sure that the mower engine has cooled down.
Take off the blower housing from the mower and you should find the ignition coil underneath. Once you’ve completed that step, turn the freewheel to ensure that the magnet aligns with the ignition coil.
Detach the wire connected to the ignition coil and proceed to loosen and remove the mounting screws that secure it in place.
Carefully take out the ignition coil and check its resistance with a multimeter. As I said before, if the numbers are greatly divergent from the standard 2500 – 5000 ohms, you should look for a replacement ignition coil.
Final Words
An ignition coil resistance chart for mowers is a valuable resource for any lawn mower owner or technician.
This chart will help you accurately measure the resistance of the ignition coil and identify any deviations from the benchmark values.
Consequently, you will be able to keep track of the ignition coil’s health and ensure that your mower is functioning optimally.
