John Deere 1070 Problems: Reasons and Solutions

1. Engine Getting Overheated

There might be several reasons for engine overheating. The very initial one is the low amount of coolant in the cooling system.

Followed by, the failure of the cooling system due to dirt, low level of engine oil, defective fan belt or improper belt tension, and the faulty thermostat are also responsible for overheating.

Solution:

Ensure sufficient coolant, clean or replace the cooling system, maintain enough engine oil, fix or replace your worn fan belt for proper belt tension, and finally replace your faulty thermostat to prevent your engine from overheating.

2. Engine Not Starting or Difficult to Start

You might find it difficult to start the engine of your JD 1070.

The reasons are mostly plugged fuel filters, closed fuel shut-off valves, loose clamps, the air in the system, jammed fuel injectors, damaged fuel injection pumps, or poor engine compression.

Solution:

To have a smooth start, keep your fuel filter clean, fix or replace the closed fuel shut-off valve, repair or change clamps, bleed out air from the system, replace clogged fuel injectors and fuel injection pump, and ensure proper engine compression.

3. Engine Stalls While Idling or Running

Engine might stop while running unexpectedly due to cold engine status, the air is stuck in the fuel lines, failure of fuel injection, clogged fuel filter, or dirty/faulty fuel injectors.

On the other hand, if there is low idle speed, clogged injector nozzles, misadjusted valve clearance or because of a damaged fuel injection pump, your engine might stall while idling.

Solution:

Warm up your engine duly, bleed out the air from fuel lines, adjust fuel injection, and change or clean dirty fuel filters and injectors to keep your engine free from stalling while running.

Adjust your idle speed, and valve clearance, and clean or replace your fuel injector nozzles and injection pump to keep your engine running while idling.

4. Engine Shut off After Starting

The reasons behind your engine being shut down after starting it might be misadjusted timing for fuel injection, clogged fuel filter, dirty fuel injectors nozzles, damaged air cleaner element, or damaged fuel injection pump.

Solution:

You need to adjust your fuel injection timing, clean or replace fuel filter, air cleaner element, and fix or change damaged fuel injectors nozzles, and fuel injection pump if you wish to keep your engine running after starting.

5. Engine Makes Weird Noise

You will have a noisy engine if you ignore the required engine oil amount mostly.

On top of that, there might be issues with the timing of the fuel injection pump, injector nozzles, cold engine, worn main bearings or crankshaft, etc.

Even then if you cannot find the reason, maybe your piston rings are broken or crankshaft bolts are loose. Overloading the engine might also be a factor.

Solution:

Ensure enough engine oil, adjust fuel injection pump timing, fix your fuel injector nozzles, have a servicing of your main bearings or crankshaft and change them if required, and warm up your engine a bit to avoid weird noises from your engine.

Fix the parts or change them for broken piston rings and tighten crankshaft bolts if necessary.

6. Low Engine Power

Damaged or dirty fuel injectors, air filters, oil filters, or fuel pipes will hinder your engine from getting its full potential.

In other ways, wrong fuel injection pressure, overloaded engine, improper valve clearance, and poor engine compression due to worn valves can also play a role to lessen your engine power.

Solution:

To ensure your desired power from your engine, keep the following stuff checked and aligned.

Fix your fuel injectors, air filter, oil filter, and fuel pipes, and keep them sound. Besides, maintain fuel injection pressure, refrain from overloading your engine, adjust valve clearance, and repair or replace valves according to requirement.

7. Excessive Engine Oil Consumption

Excessive engine oil consumption occurs if the oil leaks, the oil viscosity is mismatched, the piston rings are worn, or the pistons or cylinder liners are damaged.

Solution:

Ensure proper oil viscosity, no oil leaks, and fix or change worn piston rings and cylinder liners to control excessive engine oil consumption.

8. Transmission Issues

There are a few transmission issues that you might encounter while using a JD 1070.

You might find gear shifting hard, there might be insufficient pressure of transmission fluid, weird noises out of the transmission, or transmission fluid leaks.

Misadjusted or worn-out clutch, damaged shift forks, worn-out gear shifting mechanism, and or loose gear shift linkage will make your gear shifting hard.

Because of low transmission oil, clogged transmission oil filter, or defective relief valve will cause you insufficient transmission fluid pressure.

Transmission might appear noisy if there are worn bearings, low transmission fluid, dirty transmission oil, improper backlash or worn gears, or defective shift forks.

Check for broken seals or gaskets and damaged transmission systems if you find transmission fluid leaks.

Solution:

Adjust or change the clutch, repair or replace shift forks, worn gear shifting mechanism, and tighten the gear shift linkage for smooth gear shifting.

Refill transmission oil, clean or install new transmission oil filter, and change relief valve according to the necessity for ensuring enough transmission fluid pressure.

Get rid of the transmission noise by maintaining fluid level, taking care of bearings, worn gears, and fixing backlash or replacing shift forks. Has your dirty transmission oil changed as well?

Examine your transmission system to repair any damages and replace damaged seals and gaskets to prevent transmission fluid leaks.

9. Hydraulic System Problem

The hydraulic system might appear faulty by being overheated and getting insufficient hydraulic system pressure.

The hydraulic system gets overheated because of improper pressure, damaged or imperfect main relief valve adjustment, dirty hydraulic oil, and stuck air in the system.

Low hydraulic pressure occurs if the fluid level is low, the filter is dirty, damaged hydraulic cylinder, failure of hydraulic pump, faulty or misadjusted control valve, or there is leakage in hydraulic pipes.

Solution:

Maintain hydraulic pressure, adjust or change the main relief valve, change contaminated hydraulic oil, and bleed out the air from the system to prevent overheating.

Refill hydraulic fluid, clean the oil filter, repair or change the hydraulic cylinder and pump, adjust or replace the control valve, and fix the leakages in the pipes to avoid low pressure in the system.

10. 3-Point Hitch Issues

3-point hitch helps you to move your brush hog by working with the help of the hydraulic system. You might find your hitch stuck, slow lifting or dropping, or being jerky.

The very basic reasons are most likely there is something wrong with your hydraulic system.

In other cases, there might be cold hydraulic oil, defective hydraulic spool valve, worn or disconnected suction pipes, worn lift arm shaft, or mechanical defects of the hitch that will affect your hitch movement.

Solution:

Firstly examine and have a servicing of your hydraulic system to get by with the 3-point hitch-related issues. Let your hydraulic oil be a bit warm.

Fix or change the spool valve, suction pipes, lift arm shaft, and any faulty components of the hitch if required.

11. Electrical Problems

Electrical problems in a JD 1070 include anything related to your battery and starter motor. The battery cannot be charged in a case, or the starter might stop working and the starter motor cranks slowly in other cases.

Poor battery cell, worn or faulty battery wiring, worn belt causing improper belt tension, and damaged or lose cables and terminals will hamper your battery charging vividly.

The starter might stop working because of low battery output, defective starter motor, discharged battery cell, inaccurate wiring, and disconnected cables.

On the other hand, starter motor cranks slow for low battery output, battery draining quickly, failure of battery cable harness, and dirty or lose cables and terminals.

Solution:

Ensure your battery charging by changing poor battery cells, inspection through repair or replacement of battery wiring, cables, and terminals along with changing of the worn belt or fixing the belt tension.

Charge the battery, fix or replace the starter motor, fix and connect the cables properly to keep your starter working.

Keep your battery charged, find out any leakage in the wiring and fix it, clean or replace the cables and terminals to have a smooth starter motor cranking.

12. Steering Issues

Steering might be hard to move, you might feel a pull to the right or left, or excessive free play of the steering wheel might get you a headache.

Air being stuck in the steering system, imperfect toe-in, defective or disassembled steering column, improper inflation of the tires, or steering pump failure will make your steering hard to move initially.

Even insufficient steering oil, faulty steering and relief valve, or leakage of oil in the system might be a reason.

Tires being deflated, misadjusted toe-in, damaged tie-rod ends, steering valve and cylinder, and front hub bearings (including misadjustment) will make you feel a pull to the right or left.

Worn steering column shaft and power steering valve damaged steering pump or linkage will cause an excessive free play of the steering wheel.

Solution:

Bleed out air from the steering system, examine and fix toe-in and steering column, inflate your tires, and repair or change the steering pump for smooth steering.

Ensure sufficient steering oil, fix or replace steering and relief valve, and tighten connections to prevent oil leaks according to the necessity to serve the purpose.

Inflate your tires, change the damaged part of the steering linkage, fix or replace the steering valve and cylinder, and adjust the front hub bearings to avoid any pull to the right or left.

Examine your column shaft, power steering valve, steering pump, and linkage for any required recovery or replacement to get rid of the excessive free play of the steering wheel.
