John Deere 2025r Problems (The 360 Guidelines)

If you own a John Deere 2025r, then you must know the struggle with regular problems. It’s even more frustrating when you struggle in detecting the problems.

So, do you want to know about John Deere 2025r problems?

With the John 2025r, you might face some PTO-related problems. Again, the transmission might be out of synchronization. Sometimes, the engine might overheat or have some starting issues. Another problem is that the John Deere 2025r doesn’t have a parking brake. Thus, it’s harder to avoid emergencies.

But there’s still so much more to learn. So, we’ve written this whole article to explain this in detail.

John Deere PTO Problems: Solved

The main function of PTO is to transfer the engine’s mechanical power to another piece of equipment. It’s a stub shaft that is part of your engine. You might face three types of problems regarding PTO.

Problems Reasons Solutions
PTO won’t engage Faulty transmission oil level.Faulty electrical connection.

Clogs and kinks in hoses.

Fix transmission leak.Clean, repair, and replace.
PTO grinds but won’t engage Faulty clutch pack.Faulty clutching ring and shaft. Replace clutch pack or clutching ring.
PTO shaft not turning Faulty linkage between lever and clutch. Lubricate PTO shaft.Contact mechanic.

Problem 1: PTO Won’t Engage

The first problem you might face is PTO won’t engage. One of the main reasons for this problem is the insufficient transmission oil level.

The main reason would be a leak in the transmission system. A gasket failure might also be the case because of excessive heat. The axle seal or fluid line might also fail because of improper axle removal and installation.

Solution 1: Fix Transmission Leak

So, how to fix leak in transmission system? You might want to follow these guidelines:

  • Inspect the transmission pan gasket for any sort of damage. If found, drain the fluid and remove the pan to replace it with a new one. Don’t forget to clean the residues of the old gasket.
  • If you have a damaged fluid line, replace it. Although, on low-pressure lines, you can just replace the damaged part with a new section of the hose. But it won’t last long. While replacing the line, be sure to adjust the rubber o rings properly.
  • Whether it’s an axle seal or something else, a damaged seal has to be replaced. While replacing, be sure to clean off the residues of the older one. Also, make sure the seals are seated properly.
  • If you see a loose pan bolt or drain plug, tighten it properly. Try to find out why it came loose in the first place to prevent future casualties. Although the plugs or bolts are worn out, you must replace them.

With that, you might have fixed your transmission issues. But, the PTO in the John Deere is electric.

So, a faulty electrical connection might also be causing the problem. Although, rather than fixing it yourself, it would be wise to contact a mechanic.

Lastly, there might be clogs and kinks in the hoses. With time and usage, dirt is common to get into the hoses and clog them. The hoses might even be damaged and leaked due to it.

Solution 2: Clean, Repair or Replace

If you have a clogged hose, you can clean it using a stick. Slowly push the stick inside the hose, and the dirt or residues should come out from the other side. Of course, you have to detach the hose first to clean it.

If the hose has small leaks, you can mend it using electrical tape. Just wrap the leak a few times, and it should do the trick. Although, if the hose is damaged severely, we strongly recommend replacing it.

Problem 2: PTO Grinds But Won’t Engage

If your PTO grinds but doesn’t engage, you have a clutch pack-related issue. This mainly happens because of over workload.

The John Deere has about 25hp and is used to manage 10-20 acres land. But if you demand more work that’d suit a 50hp tractor, it’ll damage your clutch pack.

It might also be that the clutching rings and shafts are damaged. Running your garden tillers and bush hogs without a slip clutch is the primary reason for it.

Solution: Replace Clutch Pack and Clutching Ring

If you have a worn-out clutch pack, just replace it. So, how to replace tractor clutch pack?

First, you’ll have to split the tractor in half to replace the clutch pack. Be sure to that the halves are mounted properly on a base, so they don’t move. Next, use an electric wrench to remove the bolts of the pressure plate. With that, the clutch pack should come off. Replace it with a new one.

While replacing the clutch pack, also inspect the flywheel for damage. It needs to be repaired if it’s damaged too. Although, you’ll have to ask a mechanic to do that for you

If your clutch O rings are damaged, you have to replace them as well.

Problem 3: PTO Shaft Not Turning

Another problem you might face is your PTO shaft doesn’t turn. In that case, there might be a problem in the link between the clutch and the hand lever. If the linkage is bent or stuck, the clutch won’t be able to engage it.

It might also be that the linkage between the rear gearbox and the driveshaft is bent or damaged. Thus, it’s not connecting properly.

Solution: Lubricate the PTO Shaft or Contact the Mechanic

If the PTO shaft is bent, you have no choice but to take it to the mechanic. But something might be done if it’s stuck. So, what to do if my PTO shaft is stuck?

Here we’ve provided a guide for you. But first, here are the tools you need:

  1. Hammer
  2. Rust release penetrant spray
  3. Two pipes (One with a smaller diameter)

Now let’s get onto the process:

  • First, fit the smaller pipe into the bigger one. Then, take the pipe and insert it into the PTO yoke. With the hammer, strike the pipe on both sides of the yoke. This will make the drive shaft come loose.
  • Now take the penetrant spray and spray it into the front half of the PTO shaft. Now give it a couple of minutes to settle in. Then turn the shaft upside down and shake it while hitting the ground. This will make the dirt come out of the shaft.
  • Add some more spray after you remove the dirt. Now, install everything again. When putting the shaft back in, line up the flat part of the shaft with the female.
  • Now, before inserting, spray all the sides properly again. Finally, give it a little push, and the shaft will slide right in.

John Deere 2025r Transmission Synchronization Issue: Solved

The next problem you might face is the transmission is out of synchronization. It has a collar transmission mainly used for smoother gear changes using synchros.

In short, these synchros match the speed of the gears. That is the gear you shift out of to the gears you shift into. So, it’s essential for a smooth experience.

So, if the synchros don’t work properly, controlling becomes tough. Once you have attained too much road speed, downshifting becomes impossible. That’s because the engine rpm can’t match the gearbox rpm.

Solution: Apply Brake

The solution to this problem is quite simple. If you realize you’re in the wrong gear during incline, don’t just shift. Apply the brakes, so your speed is significantly reduced. With this, you’ll be able to shift into the lower gear.

Problem 1: John Deere No Parking Brake

Another underlying issue in the John Deere is it doesn’t have a parking brake. Parking brakes can totally stop the vehicle if your hydraulic brake fails. Thus, it works as your emergency break.

So, the problem here is you don’t have an emergency brake to rely on.

Solution: Maintain Brake and Low Gear Shifting

Since you don’t have an emergency brake, just rely more on the brakes you have. Thus, you have to maintain your brakes properly.

Also, be sure to tighten up your brakes. You can do it by adjusting the two nuts around the brake lever.

Another measure you can take is caution. While going down a hill, be sure to shift in low gear first.

That way, you’ll be able to control the tractor better with your brake. Also, since you don’t have a parking brake, don’t park on a hill or slope.

John Deere Engine Issues: Solved

Next, we have engine-related issues. The most common problems you might face are the engine starts but falls and overheats. First, we have provided a brief table for you:

Problems Reasons Solutions
Engine starts but falls Clogged fuel filterDamaged fuel pump

Damaged spark plug

Damaged EGR valve

Change fuel filterReplace Fuel Pump

Replace Spark Plug

Replace EGR valve

Engine overheats Clogged RadiatorLeaking Radiator cap

Insufficient Coolant

Problem 1: The engine Starts But Falls

You may start your engine, but it cuts out immediately. So, why does my engine start but cut out?

Most probably, you have a clogged fuel filter. It might also be that your fuel pump is damaged. Thus, it’s unable to inject fuel. Sometimes the spark plugs might be damaged. Thus, after ignition, the engine cannot stay on for long. Lastly, it might also be a bad EGR valve unable to return the exhaust gases.

Solution 1: Change Fuel Filter

If you have a clogged fuel filter, you must replace it with a new one. So, how to replace the clogged fuel filter in John Deere?

Start by lifting off the hood and placing a draining pan under the fuel filter. Now, slide away the hose clamp from the filter using a plier. After disconnecting, be sure to place the fuel lines vertically to avoid fuel drainage. Now, pull off the old filter and attach the new one. Reattach the hose and tighten the clamps.

With that, your John Deere fuel filter has been replaced.

Solution 2: Replace the Fuel Pump

Next, if you have a bad fuel pump, you have to replace it. So, how to replace the fuel pump on John Deere?

Locate the fuel pump and unmount it. Unscrew the bolts that hold the pump with a wrench. Disattach the lines by pulling down the clamps with a vice grip. Now take the new fuel pump and attach it with the lines. Using the vice grip, reattach the clamps. Then, mount the screws again with the wrench.

Finally, start the engine to verify if it works again.

Solution 3: Replace Spark Plugs

With a bad spark plug, you won’t be able to light up your engine. A bad spark plug will have carbon deposits. It might also be cracked and or have a bad electrode area. So, how to replace spark plugs on John Deere?

First, take off the spark plug wire. Then, turn the plug counterclockwise with a spark plug socket to loosen it up. Now take the new spark plug and set the gap according to your engine’s recommendation. You can find it in the operator’s manual. Then attach the spark plug with the socket and reattach the wire.

To set the gap in the spark plug, you can use a spark plug gapper tool.

Solution 4: Replace EGR Valve

Again if you have a bad EGR valve, you should replace it. Although it’s quite a complicated process.

Thus, we wouldn’t recommend you do it unless you are a professional. The best option would be to contact a mechanic for this process.

Problem 2: Engine Overheats

Your engine might overheat because of many reasons. But mostly, it’s because you have a clogged radiator core. Since it’s clogged, the water pump isn’t able to circulate coolant in the engine block.

You might also have a leaking radiator cap. Again, you might just be out of enough coolant for your engine to cool down.

Solution 1: Clean Radiator

If your radiator is clogged, you must clean it properly. So, how to clean the radiator on John Deere?

It is quite easy to clean a radiator. Open the hood and take an air compressor with a hose. Now, turn the compressor on and point the hose at the radiator. Slide it all over the radiator to blow away dirt from everywhere. Be sure to follow this process for the intercooler, oil cooler, and fuel cooler as well.

Before starting the process, be sure to wear safety gloves and glasses.

Solution 2: Replace the Radiator Cap

Replacing the radiator cap is easy but needs caution. So, how to replace radiator cap?

After you open the hood, locate the radiator cap but don’t immediately open it. First, give it a little touch to see if it’s too hot. If it’s normal, gently push the cap down and rotate it counterclockwise. When the cap comes loose, pull it up but be sure that your face is far from the cap.

Solution 3: Refill Coolant

Proper coolant level is crucial to your tractor’s cooling system. So, how to refill the coolant in John Deere?

With your key, open up the hood. Then locate the coolant compartment on the backside of the engine. Open the compartment cap, and almost half fill the compartment. Be sure to use the coolant compatible with your model. Also, be sure to check if the cap is tightened properly.

With that, your engine-related issues should be solved.
